Introduction
The track shoe, also known as a track pad or grouser plate, is the ground-engaging component bolted to the track chain. It is the only part of the undercarriage that directly contacts the ground. Track shoes provide traction, flotation, and stability while protecting the track chain from wear. They are a high-wear item and must be selected carefully for the job site conditions.

Description
A track shoe is a steel plate with one or more raised bars called grousers. It is attached to the track link with bolts. The design, width, and grouser height determine how well the excavator performs on different surfaces.
Function
Grousers bite into the ground to prevent slipping. Wider shoes distribute weight over a larger area, reducing sinkage in soft ground. Provides a stable platform for digging and lifting. Shields the track chain from direct ground abrasion.
Materials & Construction
Track shoes are usually made from cast manganese steel or forged alloy steel. They are heat-treated to resist impact and abrasion. The bolt holes are countersunk to protect bolt heads. Common fasteners include plow bolts and hex bolts with nuts.
Key Specifications
Width – Measured in millimeters or inches. Wider shoes = lower ground pressure.
Grouser Height – Taller grousers provide more traction but wear faster.
Pitch – Must match the track chain pitch.
Bolt Hole Pattern – Must match the track link.

Wear & Replacement
Track shoes wear down over time. Signs of wear include:
Reduced grouser height
Elongated or damaged bolt holes
Cracks or broken grousers
Uneven wear across the shoe
Worn track shoes reduce traction, increase track chain wear, and can damage the undercarriage. Replace shoes when grouser height reaches the manufacturer’s wear limit or when bolt holes become unsafe.
Selection Guide
Choose track shoes based on:
Machine weight – Heavier machines require stronger shoes.
Ground conditions – Soft ground needs wider shoes; rock needs reinforced shoes.
Application – Grading, trenching, demolition, or road work.
Track chain pitch – Must match exactly.
Excavator Undercarriage Parts
The excavator undercarriage is the foundation of the machine. It supports the entire weight of the excavator, provides mobility across rough terrain, and delivers the stability needed for digging, lifting, and swinging. Often called the “lower structure,” the undercarriage is one of the most critical and costly systems on an excavator. It typically accounts for a significant portion of the machine’s total weight and maintenance cost.

Undercarriage parts operate in the harshest conditions—mud, sand, rock, gravel, and debris. They must withstand constant friction, shock loads, and high stress. Choosing the right undercarriage components directly affects machine productivity, uptime, and operating cost.
