Introduction
The idler, also known as the front idler or guide wheel, is a critical component of an excavator’s undercarriage. Mounted at the front of the track frame, it guides the track chain, maintains proper alignment, and absorbs shock loads during travel and digging. A worn or damaged idler can cause track misalignment, accelerated wear on sprockets and rollers, and even track derailment—leading to costly downtime.
We supply heavy-duty excavator idlers engineered for durability, precise fit, and long service life. Our idlers are manufactured to OEM specifications and are compatible with major excavator brands including CAT, Komatsu, Hitachi, Hyundai, Doosan, Kobelco, Volvo, Sany, and XCMG.
Description
The idler is a large, robust wheel mounted at the front of the crawler track frame. It rotates on a shaft with heavy-duty bearings and is supported by the track frame. The track chain wraps around the idler, and its smooth or grooved surface engages the track links to keep the chain aligned as it moves.
Function:
Guides the track chain and maintains proper tension.
Keeps the track aligned on the undercarriage.
Absorbs shock and reduces vibration.
Supports the front weight of the machine.
Construction:
Idler wheel – Made from high-strength cast or forged steel, heat-treated for wear resistance.
Shaft – Precision-machined alloy steel, often induction-hardened.
Bearings – Heavy-duty tapered roller or cylindrical roller bearings.
Seals – Double-lip seals or floating seals to retain lubricant and exclude dirt.
Mounting – Bolted or press-fit to the track frame with a yoke or bracket.
Types of idlers:
Standard duty – For general excavation and normal soil conditions.
Heavy-duty – Reinforced wheel and larger bearings for abrasive or high-impact work.
Sealed and lubricated – Maintains lubrication for longer intervals.
Solid or rubber-tired – Some specialized applications, but excavators typically use steel idlers.
Compatibility:
Idlers are model-specific and must match the excavator’s track frame, track pitch, and chain size. Common part number examples include:
CAT – 123-4567, 234-5678 (illustrative)
Komatsu – 20Y-30-00100, 20Y-30-00200
Hitachi – 9101234, 9105678
Hyundai – 31N6-10010, 31N6-10020
Doosan – 110-00010, 110-00020
(Note: Actual part numbers vary by model and serial number.)
Signs of a worn idler:
Uneven or excessive wear on the wheel surface.
Looseness or play in the bearing.
Leaking seals or loss of lubricant.
Track misalignment or derailment.
Noise or vibration during travel.
Maintenance and replacement tips:
Inspect idler regularly for wear and bearing play.
Replace idler when wear exceeds OEM limits.
Always replace seals and bearings when rebuilding.
Check track tension and alignment after installation.
Use genuine or high-quality aftermarket parts for best performance.
If you know your excavator model and serial number, we can help you find the correct idler assembly and related undercarriage parts.
